Hypoplastic constitutive modeling of wetting deformation of weathered rockfill materials

Erich BAUER, Zhongzhi FU, Sihong LIU,

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 1,   Pages 78-91 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0011-8

Abstract: The wetting deformation of weathered rockfill materials has been attracting growing attention from both engineers and scientists. The importance of realistic predictions of wetting deformations for high earth and rockfill dams is a strong motivation to establish a suitable constitutive model. Recently, the hypoplastic constitutive model by Gudehus and Bauer was extended by introducing solid hardness depending on the state of weathering. The extended model takes into account the influence of the current density, the effective stress state, the rate of deformation, and the time dependent process of degradation of the solid hardness. In the present paper, the performance of this model is evaluated by comparing numerical simulations with experiments obtained from a water sensitive rockfill material. In particular, triaxial compression paths and creep deformation under deviatoric stress states are considered. Finally, the constitutive model proposed is used to study the influence of a degradation of the solid hardness on the long term behavior of a hypothetical fill dam.

Bulk Glassy Alloys: Historical Development and Current Research Review

Akihisa Inoue

Engineering 2015, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 185-191 doi: 10.15302/J-ENG-2015038

Abstract:

This paper reviews the development of current research in bulk glassy alloys by focusing on the trigger point for the synthesis of the first bulk glassy alloys by the conventional mold casting method. This review covers the background, discovery, characteristics, and applications of bulk glassy alloys, as well as recent topics regarding them. Applications of bulk glassy alloys have been expanding, particularly for Fe-based bulk glassy alloys, due to their unique properties, high glass-forming ability, and low cost. In the near future, the engineering importance of bulk glassy alloys is expected to increase steadily, and continuous interest in these novel metallic materials for basic science research is anticipated.

Distribution system state estimation: an overview of recent developments Review Article

Gang WANG, Georgios B. GIANNAKIS, Jie CHEN, Jian SUN

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2019, Volume 20, Issue 1,   Pages 4-17 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1800590

Abstract:

In the envisioned smart grid, high penetration of uncertain renewables, unpredictable participation of (industrial) customers, and purposeful manipulation of smart meter readings, all highlight the need for accurate, fast, and robust power system state estimation (PSSE). Nonetheless, most real-time data available in the current and upcoming transmission/distribution systems are nonlinear in power system states (i.e., nodal voltage phasors). Scalable approaches to dealing with PSSE tasks undergo a paradigm shift toward addressing the unique modeling and computational challenges associated with those nonlinear measurements. In this study, we provide a contemporary overview of PSSE and describe the current state of the art in the nonlinear weighted least-squares and least-absolutevalue PSSE. To benchmark the performance of unbiased estimators, the Cramér-Rao lower bound is developed. Accounting for cyber attacks, new corruption models are introduced, and robust PSSE approaches are outlined as well. Finally, distribution system state estimation is discussed along with its current challenges. Simulation tests corroborate the effectiveness of the developed algorithms as well as the practical merits of the theory.
